Erstwhile Henequén Mezcal was made by maestro mezcalero Juan Hernández Méndez & Hortensia Hernández Martínez in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca in December 2017. A total of 500 bottles of the 90-proof spirit were made using natural open-vat fermentation and alembic copper-pot stills. The mezcal was originally made for the Méndez’ personal collection before entering into a partnership with Erstwhile.

Erstwhile Henequén Mezcal Tasting Notes

Nose: It’s a fresh, smooth, and savory profile with green, mineral, and earthy notes.

Palate: A pleasant sweetness, along with cornmeal notes and citrus.

Finish: A touch of spice and a lingering tingling with a Sichuan peppercorn note.

Distillery Information

Meet Silverio García Luis and Epifania Gómez Mejía, a producer family of Zapotec heritage based in Rancho Blanco Güilá, Oaxaca. Counting Silverio and Epifania, there has been at least three generations of mezcaleros in the García family. Epifania did not grow up in a mezcal family, but learned the ropes and became a mezcalera of her own right after marrying into the García family. She was recently recognized as a Woman in Mezcal in the January 2020 edition of El Mezcal, an online publication by the Mezcal Regulatory Council (also known as the CRM, short for Consejo Regulador del Mezcal).
